Occurred on September 30, 2020 / Warrenton, Virginia, USA
Info from Licensor: I heard on October 1st, 2020 that there was a meteor classified as a Fireball (meteor brighter than Venus - https://www.amsmeteors.org/resources/posters/) that entered the atmosphere at around 0630 on September 30th, 2020.
This fireball was reportedly seen by 100’s of people between Northern Virginia and Ohio. So, given the fact that my front door faces north, I thought I would check our doorbell video. I honestly did not think I'd see anything because I wasn't sure of the exact entry point and the doorbell only sees a very small portion of the night sky. There have been a few other celestial events that have been in that area of the sky in the past but was not seen by my camera, so I was thinking this would be a very low probability of catching it on the video.
I took the chance anyway, searched all the way back 36+ hours in the NEST video history, then watched and hoped. All of the sudden at 0624 this burst of light streaked through the sky then appeared to explode or flash even brighter with a beautiful blue color. After this astonishing burst, it faded to a low glowing streak that lasted a couple of seconds before finally fading away.
I’m a science teacher and love astronomy, so of course, my first thought is to send it straight to my co-worker and friend that teaches astronomy at my school. I also reported the sighting to AMS Meteors, the report can be found here: https://amsmeteors.org/members/imo_view/report/208039. There is one error with the report, the “Moving direction” should read “From up left to down right at 183°.
