Cutting Hot Lightning from a Thompson Shaft

Occurred on May 7, 2016 / Dayton, OH, USA Info From Licensor: "Thomson 1L - Precision Ground Linear Shafting has an extreme surface hardness rated at HRC 60-65. This hardness extends to about .06-.09 deep. Using conventional carbide inserts proved futile. The material would just destroy them after only a couple of cuts. Sales rep recommended ceramic inserts and gave me some speeds and feeds as a starting point. I expected to see nice curly chips coming off and was shocked to see the shavings coming of like molten metal and sparks flying everywhere. I was able to get through four shafts with only one insert. I was very pleased. I thought it looked pretty sweet while it was cutting so I thought I'd take a video." - Jeremy Trim
