Flood Relief Comes to Fremont

Occurred on March 17, 2019 / Fremont, Nebraska, USA

Info from Licensor: "On March 14th the Platte River started rising very rapidly and by the end of the next day, the entire south side of Fremont was under water. Houses and business were destroyed with 3-4 feet of water inside and all around them. All the roads and highways out of Fremont were closed and no one could get in or out. Fremont at this point was basically shut off from everyone else. The impact this had on our community was devastating and scary. Restaurants were closing because they were running out of food, grocery store's shelves were very bare and Fremont was down to one gas station and was running very low on gas. The town was told gas would be running out within the day. Fremont started with 2 shelters for those displaced by the flood. Shelters were overflowing with families and soon 2 shelters grew into 5 shelters. The next problem that everyone was facing was there was no way for people to get food to those in shelters as all the stores had next to nothing to supply and no one could get in to help. March 17th, I heard through the grapevine that there was a convoy coming in with food and supplies for HyVee and Hilland for the dairy products and tankers full of gasoline. As soon as I heard this news I instantly teared up because everything that was being brought in was desperately needed by our community. I went up the corner of 23rd St and Broad St. in Fremont and within 15 minutes, sure enough, here comes the convoy. The convoy was led by the National Guard and Nebraska state troopers. The convoy came from Omaha and the trip normally would have taken 30 minutes, but it took them almost 3 hours to make it to Fremont. I knew I had to get this on video because it truly was a blessing that they arrived safely to us. The entire time I was recording my eyes were tearing up. With all the craziness and devastation that Fremont endured this was something positive that things will get better. Our grocery stores were filled up and gas stations were full with gasoline again. It seriously was a miracle and an answer from many prayers from the community."
