Rescue Crew Pulls Elk From Icy Pond

Occurred on March 6, 2023 / USA

Info from Licensor: "The Evergreen Fire Department rescued a large female elk that fell through an icy pond in a neighborhood meadow just before sunset. It was getting very cold as the elk swam in circles in fear. Doug Matheny, head of water rescue, used a chainsaw to break a path in the ice for her to follow closer to the shore. As dusk approached she was getting tired and cold. A fireman, engaged in the rescue, used a long pole to coax her toward the path made by Doug. When she reached the edge Doug and another fireman grabbed her by the ears to pull her closer so they could grab her front legs! She was close to 900 pounds! They pulled, and the other fireman with the pole pushed her rear end until they heroically pulled her out of the freezing water! The onlookers cheered with relief! The elk stood in shock as she tried to shake and warm up in the shade. After a while, another elk joined her and patiently waited for her to gain strength. They walked on toward the setting sun together."
