Somali Ostrich Chicks Take Shelter Under Their Dad

Occurred on March 15, 2024 / Samburu National Reserve, Kenya

Info from Licensor: "Somali ostrich chicks take shelter under their male parent on a hot afternoon in the middle of the road in Samburu National Reserve in Northern Kenya. I was fascinated seeing this behavior as it’s something I hadn’t ever seen before. I’ve since learnt that this is part of a process called imprinting which is an early-life process where baby birds learn to identify and follow their parents by recognizing the first moving object they consistently see. Being a vulnerable and endangered species, it ensures that they stay close to their parents for safety and also learn crucial survival behavior."
